Instead, they are marking the winter solstice — the shortest day of the year and the official start of winter — which lands on Dec. 21 in the northern hemisphere this year.

The text of the book is actually a poem she wrote in the 1970s for The Christmas Revels (an annual celebration of the solstice), and it has been read at such events for more than four decades.
