A former Octopus card technician who added HK$434,350 of value to Octopus cards using a home-made machine built from stolen parts pleaded guilty to theft and forgery in District Court on Monday.
Customers in Hong Kong can buy the new card for HK$88 ($11.25) from around 300 convenience shops and 10 subway stations, and deposit up to HK$3,000 ($383.56) on it.
Instead, they whip out their Octopus, a contactless smart card with a chip that communicates with a fare processor in less than a second. It has been in use in Hong Kong since 1997.
