There’s a good reason for the box turtle’s name. A hinge on the bottom of its shell lets the turtle pull its legs, head, and tail inside and close it up tight — like a box.

A Box Turtle’s range is probably several acres in size. Females will wander farther in search of a nesting site. Turtles go into a torpid state called “brumation” during winter.

At the northern end of the Adirondack Park, the DEC operates the Upper and Lower Lakes Wildlife Management Area in St. Lawrence County, which works to provide turtle species with proper habitats.
