Three people are believed to have died after nine men became trapped in a coal mine in India’s north-eastern Assam state. Authorities told Reuters on Tuesday, Jan. 7, that rescuers had worked throughout the night to save the miners. Per the BBC, the men became trapped when the mine they were working on became flooded with water.

Three workers have been confirmed dead in the Assam coal mine disaster, while rescue operations continue to free the others trapped, with teams from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and Navy divers actively involved.

The miners were trapped on Monday morning in the Umrangso area in Dimapur Hasao district, some 125 miles south of the state capital, Guwahati.

Rescue teams were working on Tuesday (January 7) to reach nine men trapped in a flooded coal mine in the remote district of Dima Hasao in Assam, India. Authorities said at least three miners were feared dead.
