The Burnaby-Willingdon Costco confirmed that the scanners were being used at its store. Now it looks like that isn't the only Costco location scanning cards before entering.

Now, it only takes a matter of seconds. To use the scanner, collectors upload a picture of the card to the app, which in turn matches the card’s features to those in their 20-million-card database.
