School was supposed to start at 7:40 a.m. at most Broward high schools, but about 8:30 a.m., many students were still waiting outside.

Many students waited in packed lines for more than an hour, and by 8:30 a.m., 50 minutes after the first bell rang, the district scrapped metal detectors for the day and let everyone in.
