Chester Nez was one of the original code talkers. He was in his late 80s, when he co-wrote the book, Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII.

The U.S. Marine Corps began its own program in 1941, primarily recruiting Navajo from the American Southwest. Eventually, more than 400 Navaho code talkers would serve with the marines.
