Before the Sherman, there was the Lee. Rushed into service and armed with two cannons, the M3 Lee/Grant wasn’t perfect—but it held the line when it mattered most.

But the M3’s design was in fact based upon expediency. Entering World War II, the United States fielded only M2A4 and M3 Stuart light tanks and a few dozen M2 medium tank suitable only for training.

The American M3 was produced in two variants, as the M3 Lee and M3 Grant tanks. Both variants were used by the Allies. The M3 Lee Tank saw action with in North Africa, Sicily and the Pacific.
