LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Severe storms that spawned likely tornadoes tore through southeastern Kentucky and portions of central Kentucky Friday night, leaving a trail of damage in its wake.

Maps issued by NWS Louisville at 12:03 p.m. showed southwestern Kentucky, including Bowling Green, under a greater than 10% risk for tornadoes of at least EF-2 strength within 25 miles.

The last deadly tornado to come through Laurel County was March 2, 2012. That tornado — an EF-2 with winds reaching an estimated 125 mph — killed six people, according to NWS data .

LAUREL COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — A Laurel County, Kentucky firefighter who was injured while responding to storm damage overnight is among the 17 people who died, according to officials.

Just after 3 p.m., Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said that number had grown to 18 across the state, including 17 fatalities in Laurel County and one in Pulaski County.
