Water levels at some Texas lakes continue to rise as excess water flows downstream from the floods over July 4 weekend.

While the LCRA was still securing federal funding to resume construction of Buchanan Dam in 1935, a June flood that struck the lower Colorado River basin also swept through downtown Austin.

KXAN Reporter Mercedez Hernandez was at the Starcke Dam in Burnet County, where the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) plans to close floodgates after holding them open for several days.

On Monday, July 14, the LCRA announced that at least two flood gates at Buchanan Dam will open to prevent water from topping over the spillway. Buchanan Dam separates Lake Buchanan from Inks Lake.

The lake is considered full at 681 feet and currently sits at 654 feet. On Saturday, LCRA announced that it was partially opening a floodgate at Tom Miller Dam, which feeds into Lake Austin.

According to LCRA, the most floodgates ever opened at one time on the dam is five, which happened twice – during Tropical Storm Hermine in September 2010 and the Halloween flood in October 2013.
