A member of the large hibiscus family that includes more than 250 species, rose-of-Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus, has been in the US for a long time and is considered a heritage plant.

The althea in our garden gets watered once a week when it's hot and there's no rain. For 30 years, it's held up its nondemanding end of the deal.
