Hermann Hesse is one of Germany's best-known authors abroad. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of a writer who explored identity, freedom, and the magic of words.
In 1952, at Hesse's suggestion, Unseld joined the publishing house Suhrkamp, which had been founded by Peter Suhrkamp two years before, and took over on Suhrkamp's death in 1959.
