Germany and Britain have delivered Western heavy tanks to Ukraine, officials said Monday, providing a key infusion of armored firepower that will aid Kyiv's battle against invading Russian troops.

Britain has 227 Challenger 2 tanks and is in the early stages of a £1.4 billion ($1.7 billion) upgrade of 148 vehicles. The first of those though won’t be available until 2027.

French General Mourret, Sub-Secretary of Artillery granted the FCM shipyard a contract to develop a heavy tank or “char d’assaut de grand modèle” meaning “great model assault tank”.

Three hundred “Tank, Combat, Full Tracked, 120mm, M103” tanks were built in the 1950s to meet the Soviet heavy tank threat. The tank was known simply as the M103 – it was never given a nickname.
