A haboob is a type of dust storm that forms after a thunderstorm. They are usually quite large and can be thousands of feet high and up to 100 miles wide.

CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (AP) — A powerful dust storm known as a haboob caused a vehicle pile-up on a central California highway, sending several people to hospitals with minor injuries, authorities said.

In simpler terms, haboobs are strong dust and sandstorms that move through hot and dry regions. NOAA says these storms usually last about 10–30 minutes but can linger longer.
