Meet the Ryukyu Flying Fox, a rare bat species from Japan known for its fox-like face, massive wingspan, and adorable yawns.
They’re some of the largest bats in the world. The endangered spectacled flying fox (), for instance, evolved alongside northern Queensland’s tropical rainforests in the Wet Tropics.
“And the flying foxes are the best animals to do that.” In 2020, the New South Wales government posted a video praising the bats for their super-pollinating powers.
With its wingspan spreading up to one metre (3.28 ft), the flying fox can travel up to 50 kilometres (31 miles) and is one of the biggest bats in Australia - making it a champion pollinator.
