In May, to mark one year since it was founded, the first Colony Days celebration was held. Despite a steady outflow of the original colonists, a community had been established.

Known as the Matanuska Valley Colony, the project had mixed results, but it did lead to a permanent settlement in the region where descendants of some of the original colonists still live.

However, by 1590, the traces of the colony had disappeared, and nothing remained of over 100 people. The only clue left behind was the word Croatoan carved on a wooden post.
