Embraer first announced the Legacy 600 at the Farnborough Airshow in 2000, designating it the Legacy 2000. The first 600 flew a year later and had already reached the private jet market by 2002.

Historically, Embraer has produced the Legacy series of aircraft, which range from mid-size business jets to large business jets, although the family of aircraft was retired in 2020.
