STOCKBRIDGE, MASS. — If durability defines the worth of a play, “The Elephant Man” by Bernard Pomerance is, at the very least, a good play, and possibly a great one.

The Elephant Man represented Lynch’s first film produced within the studio system, which came with its own set of rules and regulations that he had to observe closely.

After 45 years, it remains a powerful, sincere exploration of cruelty and compassion. “The Elephant Man,” while Lynch’s most restrained, traditional work, still bears his stamp.
