According to a report by the New York Times, elevator door-close buttons haven’t actually done anything since the introduction of the Americans With Disabilities Act in 1990.
One key feature is by way of constant pressure on the Door Open button. When fire or smoke conditions are found inadvertently, the simple release of the button allows the doors to close automatically.
Elevator doors are required to stay open for at least three seconds, and usually it's longer, no matter what. So at this point, most manufacturers have deactivated the button.
