Introduced in the original G1 cartoon and toyline, the core team consists of Grimlock (T-Rex and leader), Slag/Slug (Triceratops), Sludge (Brontosaurus), Snarl (Stegosaurus), and Swoop (Pteranodon).

In most versions of the story, Grimlock and the Dinobots were created by Transformer scientists, but that could either have been Wheeljack on the Autobot side, or Shockwave for the Decepticons.
