Your military discharge papers are officially known as DD Form 214, or just DD214. All veterans receive this Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty once they are out of the military.
If H.R.7041 is passed, it will require the military to issue a new DD-214 (or DD-214-1) at various checkpoints in a service member’s career, according to an online summary of the bill.
For veterans who are missing their DD 214, they can fill out the SF-180 form and mail it to the appropriate office to make a request for the DD 214. Or the veteran can request the form online.
DD Form 214 or DD-214 is issued upon a servicemember’s retirement, separation, or discharge from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, according to the DMVA.
