That description sounds serious, but the anime isn't. WataMote is gasp-for-breath funny, even if many of its funniest moments leave the viewer hiding under a blanket from all the cringe.

To be fair, Slam Dunk and many sports anime tend to lean into cringe to show the intense emotions of sports. Scenes like this are nothing new, but this one takes the cake.
