Crescent moon trees conflict Many Muslims have embraced Advent-type calendars as a welcome tradition, but there is debate around whether the moon trees are permissible.

Ramadan commences when a small sliver of the moon, known in astronomical terms as the “waxing crescent,” emerges and becomes visible. And that’s true across the Islamic world.

According to Crescent Moon Watch (PDF), a moon tracker run by the United Kingdom’s Nautical Almanac Office, Ramadan’s new moon will begin on February 28 at 3:45am Mecca time (00:45 GMT).

And be sure to get outside after sunset tonight (Feb. 1). For that evening a lovely crescent moon will appear to snuggle up close to Venus, particularly for skywatchers across the Western Hemisphere.
