Second baseman Dorian Gonzalez Jr. drove in a career-high eight runs, and Griffin Hugus fired a 123-pitch complete game as third-seeded Miami defeated the fourth-seeded Columbia Lions late Saturday.
After reaching the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons from 2013-15, and advancing to the Coral Gables (Fla.) regional final in 2015, Columbia had established itself. It helped that in 2010 the program received an upgraded facility, Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
The Lions are the No. 4 seed in the regional hosted by Southern Miss, a regular foe of the Crimson Tide. Columbia is 29-17 overall against a difficult nonconference schedule: the Ivy League champions played two eventual regional hosts, Oregon and Georgia.
