5. The leaves: Check the colour of the leaves on the tree. Plum trees have purple or green leaves that appear to be rolled. Cherry trees have green or copper leaves that are folded.

Those leaves will fall off, but don't worry - if your tree is healthy, you'll find that the leaves do come back. Make sure that any leaf that has fallen to the bottom of the tree is put in the bin.
