City officials, police, Safer Roads Ottawa and the Consortium de transport scolaire d’Ottawa launched the $120,000 permanent school bus stop-arm camera program at city hall Thursday morning.

Chapman said he read statistics in School Bus Ontario magazine that approximately 18,000 school buses are operating daily in the province and the average amount of blow-bys is 30,000 per day.

The installation of stop-arm cameras on school buses is a "fantastic idea" that would increase safety for students, the manager of the city's student transportation consortium said.
