Dick Francis died in 2010 aged 89. Felix Francis wrote his first solo novel, Gamble, in 2011, and his latest book No Reserve has recently been released. Mr Francis was contacted for comment.

Mr Francis added his late father was still very much a part of his own novels. “It was known that my mother, and then I, helped my father write his books,” he said.

So there have been 56 Dick Francis books and Felix has written 17 of them. He is already working on No 57, working title Joint Enterprise, about dodgy dealings in racehorse syndicate ownership.

In the final years of his writing, he passed the reins to his son Felix Francis, who now writes the Dick Francis novels published by Simon & Schuster in the UK and Crooked Lane Books in the US.
