Suraiya Gangaram, 31, was found stabbed to death in May 2015. On Sunday, Toronto police announced that her former boyfriend had been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.

Suraiya Gangaram was a devoted mother raising her three girls on her own, Ashley Gangaram says. "When it came to her kids, she was selfless. Anything that she could do for them, she would," she says.

Suraiya, who passed away on January 31, 2004, said that every Friday of the week, he rang her up at night. The actress made sure to be hovering near the phone at the appointed time.
