In 1920, eight more classrooms were added and the enlarged school was re-opened the following year and re-named for the Duke of Devonshire, the governor general of the day.
The village was demolished and rebuilt in its current location by the 6th Duke of Devonshire in the 19th century, as he decided the old village spoiled his view of the estate at Chatsworth House.
