I usually put my Ultra 100 hard drive on one IDE controller with a 80 pin cable and the CD-Rom on the second IDE with a 40 pin cable so the CD-Rom wont clock the hard drive down.

I have an ABIT mobo and have some new IDE cables. The mobo has 40 pins on its IDE connectors but my HDD, CDROM, Floppy and IDE cables have a pin missing to help figure out the orientation.
