Since 2020, Michelin has run previous tests on roads in Las Vegas and Thailand, but it didn’t say when the tires could move past the prototype stage. Airless tires are exactly as they sound.

In 2005, Michelin introduced an airless tire concept called the Tweel. The design combined the tire and wheel into a single unit, with a central rigid hub, an outer tread, and spokes in between.

Airless tires are supported by a network of flexible spokes made from high-impact-resistant poly-resin. The spokes absorb force and carry the vehicle’s weight without the risk of punctures.

One of the major modern players in this space is Hankook Tire, which began actively developing non-pneumatic tires in 2010, later unveiling the iFlex — its first official airless tire — in 2012.
