DETROIT -- Patrick Kane broke a tie with 3:32 remaining in the third period, and the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-3 at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday. Kane made it 4-3 with a power-play goal when his wrist shot from the point went under the right arm of New Jersey goalie Jacob Markstrom.

The Red Wings (4-4-1) killed 1:51 of Andrew Copp’s tripping penalty late in regulation to force OT after Evan Bouchard tied it at 10:47 of the third. The Oilers (4-4-1) took the play to the Red Wings for much of the second and third periods after Detroit’s strong first, after which it led 1-0 on J.T. Compher’s goal.
