NATO members have provided diplomatic and military aid support to Ukraine throughout the ongoing war after Russia invaded the nation in February 2022.

Amid ongoing high-level meetings between NATO leaders and Ukrainian officials at the United Nations over plans to allow Ukraine to strike Russian cities with NATO weapons, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined Wednesday a proposed update to Russia’s nuclear policy document that would expand the conditions under which Russia would use nuclear weapons.

Vladimir Putin has issued a stark threat to Ukraine’s Nato allies, saying he would expand Russia’s nuclear doctrine to potentially cover attacks against his country using advanced western missiles.

Putin has extended the list of scenarios that could lead to Russia using nuclear weapons. Whether he means it is a question critical to the course of the war. If he is serious, the conflict could turn into World War Three.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said on Sunday that Moscow's revised nuclear weapons doctrine is needed because NATO infrastructure is approaching Russia's borders ever more closely. Peskov told Russian state television that Western powers are seeking victory over Russia through their arms deliveries to Ukraine.

Russia’s Defense Ministry will soon have the authority to determine whether the conditions for using nuclear weapons are met, the Kremlin said Sunday, following announced plans to revise the country’s nuclear doctrine.

In Russia, amendments to the nuclear doctrine have been prepared and will be legally formalized in the near future, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated. He emphasized that the evolving situation in Ukraine necessitated a change in the doctrine.
