Crime rates can be measured in many ways and Teignmouth is not really “on the map” in that regard. Plymouth (also in Devon) for example has or had the highest number of known criminals per head of population in UK. It is however regarded as a safe city. Paignton, down the road from Teignmouth has very high unemployment and is really quite unpleasant in parts. I would advise staying or living there unless you want to be surrounded by droves of fat burger-eating lager-swilling characters. Teignmouth is a total contrast because it’s not on the way to or from anywhere in particular. I personally like it’s old charm Fawlty Towers feel. It has a great seafront and is one place in Torbay I would happily take my family or even move there to live. Torquay to the north also has a dire city centre and personally I avoid.

Paignton is terrible and (like it or not) it seems to be inhabited by the lowest common denominators. Teignmouth on the other hand is very pleasant. However, if you want a staggeringly beautiful beach (but no pier), I highly recommend Bantham beach. Yes it’s very busy at this time of year, but get there early and you will avoid the crowds
