The Federal water "for hire" Red Snapper season, officially ends at 12:01am July 20, 2017. The Wednesday 7/19 6:00am boat is the last 12 hour Federal water trip for Red Snapper till next year. Private anglers (those with boats) will be able to fish Red Snapper on weekends in Federal waters until Labor day Sept 4, 2017, due to an agreement with the Feds. Then after Labor Day, the regular fall Red Snapper season in State Waters will reopen (Google Texas Parks Wildlife extended Red Snapper Season 2017).... I have not fished the shorter trips or in State Waters, but I assume DD runs those fall snapper trips out to 9 miles based on what I have seen in their photo gallery. My best advice is to call DD (800-393-3474) and tell them exactly when/what you expect to fish for. They keep me straight so I don't drive from Ft Worth without being able to target what I want to catch. Sorry, if that is clear as mud but it was beginning to look like you could only keep Red Snapper anymore if you had your lawyer meet you at the dock. Otherwise the 12-24 hour trips catch a lot of Vermillion's in Fed waters anytime and there are still Ling and some Kingfish hanging around in September as well....why I like the 12/24hour boats offshore. Its a good mix bag of fish since you can only keep 2 Red Snappers per day. I always bring some frozen Ballyhoo from Port A Outfitters tackle shop also....its primarily a top water bait but I have taken some bigger Snaps bottom fishing with it also. About $11-12 a dozen. Good luck to you.
What will we try to catch in June on the state water 4 hour trip...? Bill

The 4 hour trips are bay fishing. Catch can be hit or miss. We have crushed it on Gafftop and caught some other species, where we had very little action and no keepers. You can call the shop and they might give you more insight as what to expect for that time of year. Also, see if they are doing an 8 hour state water Snapper trip. That is the trip you want to take!!! Even if you have to change the day you were thinking about fishing, if they are doing the Snapper trip, the Captain of that boat they use for that trip will put you on fish! If you are going through the effort to make a trip, and want to really catch fish, for not a lot more money, take one of the longer trips.
