Civita Castellana is a town and comune in the province of Viterbo, 65 kilometres north of Rome. Mount Soracte lies about 10 kilometres to the south-east. Civita Castellana was settled during the Iron Age by the Italic Falisci, who called it "Falerii". After the Faliscan defeat by the Romans, the Romans built a new city, about 5 kilometres away, "Falerii Novi."
