There were only guided tours when we went in May, you can visit on your own, buy a ticket, but you might have to wait a few minutes until there are enough people for a tour. The tours on the day we visited were about ten people strong, we waited about five minutes for the previous tour to end. The part of the catacombs that are open to the public are not really extensive, so while you can wander from the group, it wont take you long to see it all. The tour guides were not very informed or helpful, I suggest you read up about it before you go.
