WEBAug 28, 2022 · As a teacher and a writer, I love the promise (no typo) of this book but IMHO that’s not what was published. It’s still good, but it’s not what it could have been—which is an important lesson in itself: Life happens. On Writing was published in 2000. King was injured in mid-1999.

WEBStephen King is on of the best storytellers - he has an insane amount of good ideas and he does a lot of really interesting world building which is really cool. The actual writing itself is not the best maybe, but it’s certainly not bad. Some writers are very good at writing but their stories and/or characters are dull.

WEBStephen King is a successful writer, and a very good storyteller. But his writing itself is average at best. Moving on to "On writing": aside from the notorious adverb advice, King basically views writing as quantity over quality. Keep writing, keep reading, keep improving, and things will eventually fall into place.

As in, none of it stands out as particularly beautiful or evocative, but none of it is particularly off-putting either, and it's sufficient to keep the reader reading even if the pacing is a little bit weird. 1.
