Is there a difference between RJ-45 plugs for Cat-5e and Cat-6?

If you look at the RJ45 front on i.e. as if you were going to plug it in to your eye, you will see the alternate up/down wires of a CAT6 RJ45, as opposed to the flat configuration for CAT5 Rj45s.

WEBAug 26, 2012 · For me at least, CCA effectively loses any benefits of upgrading in the first place either from CAT5 copper to CAT5e CCA, or from CAT5or5e copper to CAT6 CCA. Also I am using those terms loosely because CCA can't legally be called CAT 5, CAT 5e, or CAT 6 since it meets none of the UL, RoHS safety laws, or TIA/EIA data transfer specs.

The measured NEXT (for example) of a cat6 cable might exceed that of a cat6a because of particular environmental conditions or manufacturing differences but it doesn't mean that the cable itself is actually 6a. The ratings on the jacket are confirmed by a cable tester, not the other way around.

WEBDec 30, 2010 · Cat6 allows for 37-55m (121-180 ft) cable runs (depending on how much electrical noise there is in the environment) for 10 GigE; Cat6A allows for 100m (330 ft) runs at 10 GigE. Either will be fine for 1 GigE. If your runs are with-in the shorter lengths, then Cat6 should be sufficient. Don't think UTP or STP would make much of a difference.

WEBIf you seriously can't get the budget for Cat6 (Cat6a, while we're at it) instead of Cat5E to all your servers, then I guess some length criterion like that is as reasonable as anything. But it really seems nonsensical to me to connect crucial servers with anything less than the best cabling you can lay hands on.
